Wrong-Chain Crypto Payouts: What to Check and Do
A wrong-chain crypto payout may still be recoverable: verify the transaction, identify who controls the address, then follow the correct wallet or exchange route.

If a crypto payout arrives on the wrong network, verify the transaction on that chain and identify who controls the receiving address. A confirmed transfer cannot be reversed by the sender; recovery depends on whether the recipient can access the funds and send them again.
Start with the transaction hash, the asset and amount, the network used, and the destination address. Check the relevant block explorer: MetaMask’s help center advises confirming transaction status and checking the address balance there before treating a missing wallet display as lost funds.
How do you check where the payout went?
Use the transaction hash to confirm the network, status, token and destination address. If the transfer is still pending, the sender may be able to cancel it, but once it is confirmed, the funds are at the destination on the network shown by the explorer.
If the address is your own wallet on an EVM-compatible network, check that same address on the network that received the payout. MetaMask says its users’ recovery phrases generate the same address across EVM-compatible networks; the token may simply be hidden until the recipient switches networks or adds the token details.
For Monero, the route matters because bridge services, atomic swaps and wrapped XMR involve different mechanisms. Our xmr bridge explainer covers those distinctions in more detail.
What should you do if the payout went to an exchange?
Contact the exchange that controls the destination address and ask whether it can recover or credit the deposit. Kraken’s deposit guidance says an unsupported asset or network may leave a deposit uncredited and directs users to provide the transaction ID, asset, amount and deposit address when contacting support.
Include the network used and the time of the transfer, and keep the transaction hash. Ask about any recovery fee and whether recovery is possible before sending more funds; Kraken says recovery depends on the case and is not guaranteed.
- Save the transaction hash and screenshot or copy the explorer details.
- Check the receiving platform’s supported asset and network information.
- Contact support through the platform’s official app or website.
- Do not share a recovery phrase or private key with anyone offering to retrieve the funds.
When can you move the funds yourself?
If you control the receiving wallet and the asset appears on the wrong network, you may be able to send it to a fresh deposit address on a supported network or use a bridge. MetaMask’s guidance notes that a bridge transaction also needs the source network’s native token to pay its network fee.
Check the token contract and destination network before moving anything. A matching ticker does not prove that two tokens on different networks are the same asset, and a wallet address on one chain may not be controlled by the same key on another.
If the address belongs to someone else, only its owner can send the funds back. If the payout went to an exchange, a contract or an unsupported network, the recipient’s support team or project may be the only recovery route; the practical takeaway is to confirm the network with the payer before they resend.
